Covanta Energy Criticizes New York Carbon Emission Policy

Covanta calls the proposed cost-per-ton for carbon emissions policy "brutal" for the case of incinerators as "clean energy" under New York standards.

The proposed carbon pricing would charge companies cost-per-ton for the pollution they emit in order to encourage efficient technology and reduce CO2 emissions. While this new policy would allow for companies to function well under the Clean Energy Standard in New York, Covanta argues that it does not consider any preventative impact that the company makes by deferring landfill methane emissions.

The new carbon pricing would cost Long Island tens of millions of dollars every year to continue with incineration procedures, potentially threatening the existence of the incinerators.
